WWE Night of Champions Preview

Matches have been hyped, they’re all ready to go at it, now all that is left, is the PPV. I’m sure most of you are excited for the event, I know their will be a few people who come to this site that won’t be excited, however, the majority are. As a WWE fan, we always want our questions answered and to see ‘what happens next’ is worth paying for and worth the wait. Major conflict has been arising, champions could be walking out with nothing. What will happen? Who will walk out triumphant? Will Orton give up the title against Henry as this feud is fresh? All these are simple questions we’re asking as Night of Champions is arising. Lets run down through the matches for the event.
Divas’ Championship: Kelly Kelly vs Beth Phoenix
Kelly has had her fun as champ and has improved in the ring. There’s no denying that, whether you like her or despise her like I do. She even got a big win over Beth at Summerslam. Now it’s the Glamazon’s time to shine. Otherwise this entire angle is pointless. So yea, pretty sure Beth will walk away from Night of Champions successful.
Tag Team Championship: Air Boom vs Awesome Truth
Just as I claimed weeks ago, the Tag Team Division is merely getting a boost because the whole gimmick of the PPV is that every match is a title match (except the obvious one). I like Miz/Truth, as they are entertaining on the mic, well, not really Miz, but working with Truth, he’s better than flying solo. But I don’t think Kofi/Bourne are done yet. I see a victory for Air Boom so that this feud can be extended for the next couple of months. Hell, it’ll keep all four guys busy. There’s no way the division will reach JeriShow levels of awesomeness, but the potential is there. Like, what else could these four guys do after this feud? I think they’ll be more than great full that they have a slot on the card, and will do their utter best to impress us.
Intercontinental Championship: Cody Rhodes vs Ted DiBiase
This is the latest match on the card, as it was announced on Smackdown last Night. What do I make of this? Well along with the US title, that will be two midcard titles on the line in angles that never involved the belts themselves. If you ever needed more evidence to argue that the damn things are props, look no further than here. Oh, I guess I’ll go with Rhodes since DiBiase hasn’t exactly been made to look halfway decent.
United States Championship Fatal Four Way: Dolph Ziggler vs Jack Swagger vs John Morrison vs Alex Riley
Not once during the Ziggler/Swagger feud did we get even a mention of the title. Hell, they’re not fighting over the damn thing; they’re fighting over the managerial services of one Vickie Guerrero. Miss Elizabeth she ain’t, I’ll tell you that. I love how this match was thrown onto the card at quite literally the last minute. I expect Swagger to screw over Dolph and take the title himself. Then we’ll see Vickie eventually turn on Ziggler which will effectively kick-start his face turn. Morrison and Riley are currently worth less than Evan Bourne as a singles competitor. They’re involved simply to give the fans someone to cheer for.
World Heavyweight Championship: Randy Orton vs Mark Henry
I’m routing for the Worlds Strongest man (10 years a go) Mark Henry to win this match. I’m tired of Orton as the go-to guy and Henry would be an interesting champion. It would definitely shake things up on Smackdown. I obviously don’t think he’d make a great champion with compelling matches, but I often wonder what we might experience with the World’s Strongest Man as World Heavyweight Champion. Let’s face it: Daniel Bryan is going nowhere at the moment, Sin Cara is in the middle of an identity crisis, and Christian is going to be fed to Sheamus. I want something fresh in the title scene and Henry can satisfy that craving.
No Disqualification Match: Triple H vs CM Punk
I’m beginning to wonder if Punk is losing his heat because this angle is killing his momentum. As it seems to be, Triple H is being portrayed as the victim here. He has yet to do anything wrong. Did he hire Kevin Nash? Allegedly, no. Did he cost Punk the title at Summerslam? He counted Cena down for the three count! Did Triple H come out and insult Punk for weeks? Hell no, he rehired the guy! This whole situation is like a bizarro Austin/McMahon scenario. In the beginning, Punk was right about a lot of things he said, but recently he’s come across as whiny and petulant. Triple H is not the overbearing, egotistical prick he was ten years ago. How are the fans supposed to rally behind Punk as the anti-authority figure when the boss hasn’t technically done anything wrong? The only way this angle would have been an absolute success would be if Punk took on a corporate stooge, but since there aren’t any around, he chose Triple H. Bad move. When Austin fought McMahon, Vince was in the middle of a heel turn and the fans ate up everything Austin did. Triple H has honestly (and I can’t believe I’m defending the guy) done NOTHING to show he’s the old Game. Don’t get me wrong, i’m just saying it as it is. I do think he still has it, but he hasn’t proved that he does. Will Nash get involved? More than likely, yes. Who will he screw? I don’t know. So, there is still unpredictably there. I think Triple H will get screwed, though, why? Read on and you’ll soon see why.
WWE Championship: Alberto del Rio vs John Cena
I like Alberto Del Rio as champion, as I said in my last column here, he’s got it all, some will agree, others didn’t, but I think he does. Unfortunately, he won the belt at a time that something bigger than the championship was at stake. When the smoke from that issue ends, Alberto might be on the outside of the main event scene looking in. After the two great PPV bouts they have had this year, I think we are going to see Punk and Cena battle it out in a Hell in a Cell match. So, therefore Cena will win.
So from what you’ve seen me writing, I have a positive and negative outtake on the PPV. Usually i’m more positive, but I have a horrible feeling inside me WWE could be dropping the ball. I sincerely hope that they aren’t. But overall I am looking forward to Nigh of Champions. I, as a UK viewer, don’t have to pay for Night of Champions as I can watch it on my Sky Sports package which I have every month anyway, for nothing extra. I’m hearing US viewers have to pay around 50 dollars or something like that, not sure if i’d pay that match, but since i’m getting it for nothing extra, why wouldn’t I watch it? Question is, will I stay up till 4 AM to watch it? Not sure, I might or I might just get up early in the Morning and watch it before I leave my house.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed reading, please leave your comments below with thoughts, predictions, angle ideas you have etc, whatever it is regarding WWE Night of Champions, drop your comment below.
I just don’t really care about NOC, it feels like just a throw away ppv until we get to see The Rock at Survivor Series. Honestly, Ted/Cody and Dolph/Swagger interest me more than Cena/Berto and Orton/Henry. The two world title feuds are weak IMO.
I agree with you about the HHH/Punk feud, Triple H hasn’t done anything wrong. He looks like the reasonable one while Punk’s starting to look like the asshole. Punk’s promos worked with Cena and Vince, but he needs to change it up with Triple H, unless he turns heel.

Yea, I am hearing quite a few people saying its a throw away PPV. Ted and Cody can be interesting, but for both US and IC title matches, nothing is actually said about the titles. It’s frustrating, like it should be about the titles.
Henry and Orton. I keep changing my opinion on this one, I think in order for Henry to fully get over as a main eventer, he’ll have to wait 2 or 3 PPV’s to win the title. That’s extra time to promote him as a ”scary heel”.
I don’t know why the hell Triple H is being portrayed as the bad guy, I know anything can change and all, but I just don’t see what could change to make this more interesting again.

Orton/Henry interests me, because Henry has been a beast and I’m curious if Orton will be able to stop him. Orton’s smart, so he may let Henry do something dumb out of rage and then beat him.
Del Rio/Cena interests me, because we haven’t really seen them wrestle that much. I’m curious to see what they can do.

Does those matches influence you to buy the PPV?

I can’t afford it. I buy Rumble due to getting my tax fund the next month when I have to pay. And I bought WM when Flair “retired”.

I see, they are very overpriced. We get half PPV’s for free over here. WM, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, Survivor Series always you have to pay for. Then there is another 2 or 3 you have to pay for, not the same every year except the 4 I mentioned. Anyway, to buy them we have the same price, 21 Euro, which is about 29 dollars. So, it’s not to bad really. But I wouldn’t buy all of them.

O don’t care about this PPV, but I may end up watching because it’s free, and I tend to do results for the Chikara fan forum, and they have a show tomorrow too. I didn’t actually know about half of the matches on the card, the only ones I find interesting are he tag match and Cody/Ted. I’d love Mark Henry to win though; a heel champ means he can feud with Randy and Sheamus, especially with their little feud.
I wonder how long WWE will wait until they debut Antonio Cesaro though; and I’m looking forward to the Misticara/Sincognito feud

I see.
What I do like about WWE at the moment, they are better preparing feuds for the future, to keep us watching and interested to look forward too.

I always get The Rumble and Wrestlemaina (except this years) usually Summerslam (except this years) and Survivor Series, any other one that sounds really good (this years MITB) and TLC as a birthday present to myself.
So I’ll be buying Survivor Series and TLC this year, nothing more, they are overpriced and only sometimes worth it.

Is it just last few years you haven’t been getting PPV’s? Like did you get AE PPVS?

Last year’s Night of Champions was great but this year’s card is not that great. Both World Championship matches are not really that interesting. The WWE Championship Match should have been a Six Pack Challenge like last year and the WHC match should have been a triple threat including Christian. Yeah I know Orton vs. Christian again but you gotta admit it would be a better match than Orton vs. Henry.

I have never bought a televised PPV (I have attended three live PPVs) and I don’t plan on ever doing so. $45 or whatever they charge is a ridiculous price for a fake sport. I’m okay with UFC and Boxing doing it because they are real but the WWE is really just a live television show. In my opinion, if I can watch the Super Bowl for free, I should be able to watch the WWE for free. Do they really need the extra money?
LikeLike
With WWE, they say your’re guaranteed a good show, they say Boxing or UFC it could be over in 30 seconds, or you could have 10 rounds of crap.
With buying PPVs, I look at it differently from your point of view cause they’re reasonable priced. Do they need the extra money? Doubt it very much. But they still sell 1000s of PPVs.

I agree it won’t end early but that don’t mean you are guaranteed a good show. Do you think Capitol Punishment was a good show?

I find the PPVs 50 or 60 bucks.

“coming down the isle accompanied by Mae Younggggg…..MARRRKKK HENRYYYY!!!”
I think Nash is going to come out and cost HHH the match, and help Punk win. Why? Laurinitis wants to be in charge. This will take the COO position away from HHH. Laurinitis can use the term Mr. Future Endeavored just like they copyrighted a while back. The start of a HHH vs. Nash feud to waste time. lol. Let CM Punk move on.

Gotta predict that HHH beats Punk. I know Nash is scheduled to appear at NOC and will cause Punk to lose making HHH a heel in the process. Orton is going over Henry, for sure. Maybe he’ll lose at Survivor Series to Henry. Who knows. Del Rio is beating Cena. I know that for a fact seeing as Del Rio is heading to Mexico in October as the WWE Champion. Beth Phoenix winning the Divas championship in her hometown of Buffalo would make sense. I can’t see Cody losing to Ted either. Air Boom are almost 100% guarentee’d to retain. Why? Because Kofi and Bourne both lost singles matches to them on Raw and Smackdown this week. My theory is: Lose on TV, win on PPV. No idea who will win the Fatal 4 way. I’d say Swagger or Ziggler. I’d rather Ziggler retains over Swagger. That could lead to a much needed Swagger face turn. Thoughts?

hmm, Cena and Punk matches could work either way. The way you said it or, Cena wins, Punk wins, they face at Hell in a Cell match and it will END, fully END that. It still seems like their is still that match needed to end the feud.

I get what your’re saying, i’m just saying that’s the point of view WWE always say when asked questions like that.

I think what they mean is you get a 2 and a half to 3 hour show. With boxing or MMA, you could be watching a 5 second fight.

LET’S GO DIBIASE. I want a gooooooooood Rhodes/DiBiase feud. Like a real good one. Hope DiBiase picks up the shock victory extending this on.
I want Kelly to win over Beth simply cos I just don’t get Beth. She’s not cool, and I had to laugh when she was called a saviour to the divas division and on Raw fucked up her finisher on Eve. L-O-L stupid bitch.
I think HHH will win, Henry will win, Swagger will win, and then john cena cos cena always wins, man that guy is a championship whore. He’s wore that thing more than a freakin’ condom….

I think it’s too early for Ted Jr. to win. People won’t buy it. Have him try a few times, then he wins while Cody moves up that booking order.

Say what you want about Cena but he tweeted ME.
Anyway, when you think about it, Del Rio will actually retain going into the mexican tour which I forgot about.

I actually think this card looks strong. The only match I’m not at all interested in is Cena/ADR, because the story had been pratically non-existant, and didn’t even make sense starting off.
It should be interesting to see what happens with the Ziggler/Swagger feud. Plus, I expect the four guys in the match to make it a good one. And the tag team division showing signs of revitalization this title could turn out important.
I don’t expect the divas match to be great, and the story has gone bad, but NOC being in Beth’s hometown gives hope for a new, good champion.
Rhodes/Dibiase have a a decent, slow building feud. So I don’t see Rhodes losing the title just yet. I like both of these guys, so am interested in seeing what kind of match they can. Plus, the IC title picture has the ability to really open up on SD.
Orton/Henry hasn’t been terrible, I’m really unsure who’ll win. I don’t expect a good match, but for some reason, am still interested to see how this plays out.
Clearly, I’m looking foward to, and buying this ppv for, Punk/HHH.
So yeah, I may be in the minority of those looking foward to NOC, and expecting it to be good.

The funny thing is, I buy him actually doing that. He seems very loyal to the business.

Yea, he does. Don’t forget, as fans, we’ve yet to see Cena as a heel again, so hopefully he will turn heel eventually and it will boost his character interest.

“New and Fresh” sounds like a deoderant or something.

The problem is that so many of those who boo him now will cheer for him, when he turns heel. VERY few heels are effective today due to that group of fans.
LikeLike
Yea, that’s true. But even so, I still think he’d get over very well, and fans would be interested if the heel change. It’s been what, 7 years since he was heel? The funny thing is, after he changes heel, when he goes back face, he will be more popular, just like what Hogan did.
LikeLike
I don’t know. Those “heel-cheerers” are very fickle. Within 2 weeks after he turns back face, they’d start booing him again. I want to see him turn heel, then about a month later, reaveal that it was a set up all along and he was a face the whole time. The hate from the net would be hilarious.
LikeLike
It surely would he hilarious. If Cena was heel for a good long time, then turned as a face, then he could get over as a face again, IMO. But for such a big turn, the turn itself would have to be good. You can’t just like turn on the fans. How would Cena turn heel, if he were too?
LikeLike
Honestly, I don’t think the way a person turns matters as much anymore. With so many who boo/cheer whoever they want, to them it won’t matter.
LikeLike
WWE’s had many chances to turn Cena heel. But they won’t do it because of the kids, personaly, if Cena steps down as the “Poster Boy” I hope Alex Riley steps in. But that wouldnt matter, the people that are Riley fans now, with turn on him if he becomes the “Poster Boy” like people did when Cena became the “Poster Boy”.
LikeLike
Exactly, it’s not just in wrestling, but pop culture in general. Once something reaches a certain level of popularity, people crap on it. That’s why things from today will rarely be considered “classic”. They won’t be given the chance.
