The match that has been anticipated by millions for the past eight years is finally (Pun Intended) upon us. This match has been heavily promoted specifically in these last 12 months as the match was announced, heck, I get goosebumps every time these two men are in the ring together. Why? It’s not just a wrestler vs. another wrestler. The Rock isn’t just a wrestler; he is a phenomenon, a brand. This match is indeed the true main event of the night. We may see better wrestling matches, but at the end of the day, this is the only match you’re really going to care about. In fact, I doubt you’ll even be thinking about the other matches once the video preview for this match airs. You will be all focused solely on this, Anticipating it. It’s been years since a match has been built 12 months in advanced before they actually properly lay hands on each other, and to keep fans interested all along the way, I imagine is quite difficult. I don’t think there has been once in the last 12 months I have not wanted to see John Cena talking about The Rock or vice versa. There is so much to talk about and be excited about. It’s almost unpredictable how this match will turn out, I have my predictions, as you’ll find out later in this column but still. This is going to be absolute compared to The Rock vs. Hogan. It’s going to be a helluva lot better. Why? We have BOTH guys in their prime, whom have done it all and beyond. With The Rock vs. Hogan, Hulk was past it, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. The Rock vs. John Cena is two megastars in their prime about to give us one helluva battle!
This match isn’t ”New vs. Old”, more so past vs. present. However, as I said, The Rock is still in his prime so you get what I’m saying there regarding that it’s not ”New vs. Old”. This match portraits vibe that it means everything for both men. When we watch all the promos, we can see The Rock wants it and we see that John Cena ”needs” it. The Rock is a goal-getter, he sets out his goals and does his utmost best to accomplish them, The Rock also feels he has a major point to prove to us that he still has it. John Cena is a man who will stop at nothing to win, he’ll go against an entire army just to win…..he’ll ”Never Give Up”, especially with the Cenation fully behind him. The Rock is from the most successful era in all of WWE history, the Attitude Era, when we see The Rock, we get a glimpse of the Attitude Era again and we mark out because he reminds us how great the Attitude Era was. This match, unlike ANY other match on the card will get media attention because you have a huge and I mean HUGE Hollywood star going in the ring again facing off against John Cena. Also think about it, does The Rock NEED the money for this? Does The Rock have to risk his body by being physical? No he doesn’t. The Rock is doing this out of passion and love for wrestling.
Assuming you all know, WWE talent once were complaining about The Rock not ”putting anybody over” and getting the main event spot at WrestleMania, the biggest stage of them all and where EVERY WWE superstar wants to be apart of it. Some also think it’s unfair as he’s not on the road every night or whatever. Let me just say to them, what sort of idiots are you? You know The Rock is a MEGA star in Hollywood who more than likely will attract new fans to WWE, you know he literally has millions of followers, I’m including those who don’t watch all year round but will watch RAW because he’s on it. People go out of their way to watch The Rock, whether it will be on YouTube, streaming websites or on WWE.com etc.. WrestleMania will get well over a million buy rates and will get media attention all over the world. Do you know what that means? That means each and every talent backstage will get extra dollars for WrestleMania, they’ll get fatter pay cheques. That’s a fact. The Rock is tremendous business for WWE so why wrestlers backstage were complaining about The Rock, I don’t know.
Fans are wondering how this match will play and who will win. Well I have two theories for this.
- Theory one: The Rock will win.
- Theory two: John Cena will win.
Simple? Why yes it is. But now to explain them and what it’ll mean for each man to win.
Reasons why The Rock should win. 
When you’re reading this, let the following just sink into your head. WrestleMania 28 is in Miami, the home town of The Rock. WrestleMania 28 is built as ”The Rock’s Night, The Rock’s Pay-Per-View”. Thousands of people will be purchasing WrestleMania purely to see The Rock whip John Cena’s ass. There will be 70, 000 strong in attendance with roughly I can imagine 80% being The Rock fans, WWE will want to make sure fans go home happy. This match is the final bout on the entire show, it’s the perfect way to send fans home with a smile on their faces. Another valid reason on why The Rock winning isn’t impossible: If The Rock won, it will show to fans that The Rock will be staying, if The Rock stays and fans know that, won’t those non consistent fans want to tune in to see The Rock. It’ would also lead to an awesome follow up match between the two. 
Reasons why John Cena should win. Firstly, The Rock has NOTHING to prove that he’s great, so a loss to John Cena wouldn’t be such a bad thing, like it wouldn’t make The Rock look weak or ”past it” or anything. Fans know John Cena has been wrestling non-stop for the last 10 years and that The Rock hasn’t being. If John Cena won, it would indeed put Cena ‘over’ more than the face of the WWE, it would potentially make him a legend because he defeated The Rock in the ”biggest match of all time” on the ”grandest stage of them all”. Cena would be known as the guy who defeated The Rock in his first WrestleMania since years before his last one. John Cena would be the guy who defeated the man who bet BOTH Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold at WrestleMania events.
Who do I want to win? Honestly, I’m not rooting for just one of these men. I want to see a good clean match with these megastars telling a magical story that we have anticipated for years. I have no doubt in my mind they will put on one of the greatest matches of all time. I think it’s nearly more important for The Rock to win it, though. Some reasons are mentioned two paragraphs up. However, about sending fans home happy, for the long term it may be more important for The Rock to win. As I said before, he’ll be drawing in a lot of fans who will buy that Pay-Per-View who probably haven’t done so in years, they aren’t going to want to watch again if Cena wins, are they? But I’m sure they wouldn’t mind watching a follow up match, would you?
Once fans see they will get their moneys worth watching The Brahma bull – The Rock beating John Cena, they will seriously think about watching RAW the following night. If WWE use the moment on the RAW after WrestleMania top hype up The Rock vs. John Cena part 2, then those part time fans should continue to watch it. Ratings inflate, fans enjoying the product more, WWE makes more money…. everyone’s happy.

The news last night about Lesnar signing as well is interesting especially considering The Rock mentioned it in a talk show. Could Lesnar get involved in the main event? Cost Rock the win? Hell he might get involved in the Taker match for all I know but yeah lol

I write this column last week and just added a little bit to it, but my thoughts are constantly changing throughout the course of WrestleMania week. I’d love a Rock vs. Cena re-match but not sure if I’d like another full year of it. I loved the past 12 months but not another 12 months! Rock needs to win MORE than Cena IMO, as I said in the column.
Rock vs. Taker would be good. But what I think it’ll happen is a confrontation between Brock and Batista since they’re both in talks with WWE, as it seems anyway. Don’t want to expect Brock or Batista to return as I don’t want to be disappointed.

Great read, I also think people are underestimating how good the action will be. Both are very good in ring performers especially Cena on PPV where he seems to take his game to a whole new level.
My hope is that Cena turns heel either to win the match or in lashing out after losing a tightly fought contest. People moan on about merchandise and it is a valid point but this guy is just so stagnant as a face now, it really is time to do the turn. It would give the wwe something hot to work with post-Mania (when some of the biggest stars depart) and would present so many cool new storylines and opponents.
Anyway just ordered Mania and I have to say that I haven’t been as excited for a match since Rock first faced Austin at Wrestlemania 15.

That’s a great point. Cena when allowed is actually pretty smart, creative and has great wrestling ability. Look at his performance with CM Punk at MITB last year! He practically put Punk over IMO.
Agreed fully with Cena and merch biz. The guy makes WWE a lot of money, but so does The Rock, which my reasons above are why I think The Rock will win. Something BIG will happen in that match regarding the ending, but have no clue how it’ll play out, which is great.

If Cena wins, then Rock has to get mad and react accordingly over the months. Do some promos on the film sets where he appears to be seething with anger over the loss, going into detail of where the match went wrong for him, talk passionately about how bad he wants to beat Cena who he admits he might have underestimated going in. They can’t just have Rock lose and then continue with the same build they constructed going in. It would have to get more intense, more personal, more heated.

If Brock or Batista gets involved, I now think it’ll be in the Taker/HHH/HBK match. Brock would announce that he wants to face Taker at WM 29, that’d be epic. But don’t expect him to return as of all, it’s still a possible rumour!

I would love to see HBK/Taker/HHH square off at Wrestlemania 29 and there’s a real chance it could happen if HBK screws HHH tonight. And I do think Lesnar will sign at some point for a one off match.

I have out Cena in my bet with PaddyPower. But I have a stong feeling that Rock may win. If they do a best of 3, like it has been speculated, the Rock will win for me. If it is really “once in a life time” then Cena HAS to win. But then again, it may be more damaging than ever before for the biggest WM to date ending with 70 thousand people booing Cena out the building for beating the Rock. And then there may be Brock….I dont know hahaha thats why I am so excited for this match….NUMBER 1 IN MY MOSRT ANTICIPATED.

If it’s a 3 match feud, Rock will win first and Cena will get second two, only makes sense really. Have Rock win first because it shows if Cena beats him the second time; he bet the Rock and not Dwayne Johnson. Honestly, I think it’s way more important for The Rock to win. Too many people will be buying, reading about WM to see if The Rock will win. They won’t want to watch again if The Rock lost to super Cena. It’s highly anticipated and It better NOT FAIL!

6 months into this whole Cena-Rock build up I was firmly sitting in Team Bring It. But then Cena started bringing it and Rock’s game had become a shadow of what it used to be. So I started liking Cena more, plus the promos of him started making me realise how hard he works so he earned more of my respect, whereas websites were reporting how The Rock was being a diva to everyone backstage and what have you so he lost my respect. So I switched to Cenation. Then I read an article on another site with all these good points about Rock, saying how former reports of being a diva and what not was false. So now where do I stand? I dunno.
I do know it’ll be a great match and I honestly don’t know who will win, because there are what if scenarios for if Cena wins and if Rock wins. I can’t wait for it.

That’s exactly what WWE were trying to do with that, put Cena over Rock and somehow try to balance them in terms of how good they are. I’m Team Bring It, like who knows if I would of started to watch wrestling in the first place if it wasn’t for Rock and Austin.

What a great article, it has seriously hyped the match just that little bit more for me! Being an attitude era fan I am really rooting for a Rocky win, Cena is good but The Rock is why I watch wrestling even to this day, well him and Jericho. The whole show is bound to have me on the edge of my seat and I hope above all else they do let the Miami crowd go home happy with a Rock win, as Ray said it benefits the whole company if he does! The Rock isn’t 49 years old like Hogan was when Hogan faced The Rock. If The Rock was still in the WWE, he’d still be the Face of the WWE so I think The Rock will win. I think it doesn’t look good if the WWE claims The Rock is so great and then he loses to John Cena.

As I’ve said numerous times, a Stone Cold style heel turn by Cena would be an awesome way to go. Cena had stated recently that ‘This is who he is and will never change’ wait, hang on, surely if he did turn then he would be swerving us fans?
One thing that plays on my mind is the close of the show, a stadium full of Rock fans booing Cena louder than you can possibly imagine… WWE can’t really close the show with a clean finish for Cena, can they?
There’s one thing that intrigues me about the match to, The Rock is not one of WWE’s contracted stars so there’s a good chance he would have told Cena that there is no way he will put up with his Superman comebacks.
The Rock says… ‘When I hurt your arm, you pretend it actually hurts…’ Being the Rock and have no repercussions from WWE by telling the Golden Boy straight.

That’s a very interesting point. I know both of these guys had total creative control on the outcome of the match, Rock said whatever we decide to do, it’ll be epic. Whatever way the match finishes, it has to be something new and creative IMO!

Love what you did with the reasons why they should win. It’s a hard one and I don’t think Rock is quite ready to pass the torch yet, so who knows. If someone interferes, I could see them costing Rock the match to set up a match vs. Rock next Mania. Or if they interfere against Cena, set up a Cena vs. whoever match. My interest in mania raised about 10% after hearing that someone could return. Nice work Ray.

This is the thing, it has nothing to do with passing the torch IMO, it’s not past vs. present like it was with Hogan/Rock. That was 2 different generations, Rock/Cena isn’t really generations….more so the space of a few years.
Yeah, my interest has gone up 20%, but my expectations has gone down by 30%, this way I won’t be disappointed!

IDK about the hometown reason. WWE has a habit of making the hometown hero lose/be embarrassed in front of their crowd. But I do see where you’re going with the possibility of Rock coming back.
Plus Cena winning could be like Hogan/Rock at WM 18. Rock was booed way worse than Hogan that night but Rock still won.
So there’s many ways they could go with this.

Brock and Batista will lay out Cena and Rock, becoming the new Two-Man Power Trip. Rock will be busy making movies while Cena tries and fails to fight odd The Trip for the next few months. Just when Cena is about to be finished, Rock’s music will hit. Boots to Asses will commence. Cena and Rock fight the Trip off, gain respect for each other and have a match next year about respect, not insults.

Tista could cut his great heel promos whilst Lesnar pounds the crap out of him. Lesnar and Tista openly talking about how they’re just there for the money would also contrast well with Cena’s talk about working hard and giving back to the industry.

I don’t like Cena, but I think he’ll win. From a business perspective it doesn’t make sense to have the Rock win because he won’t be around as much as Cena will. I don’t really have any strong feelings for this match because I dislike John Cena, but I never liked the Rock that much either so this match doesn’t really elicit any emotion from me.

Like the reasons I said in the column and I doubt WWE would want WM to end with 78,000 fans booing Cena and I can’t see Cena beating Rock cleanly. I have a strong feeling someone will get involved. I bet Miz will try to screw Cena or something but fails.

I don’t think it’s the other way around. After this match John Cena will still be around every week selling a ridiculous amount of merch, in all likeliness the Rock won’t be around too often. It may be in the Rock’s hometown, but many fans will be from different areas and whilst they may not be happy if Cena won, there will be disappointed fans either way.
I could see Miz getting involved before he was added to the GM match, but now I’m less sure about who could get involved.
Matches I’m looking forward to:
1. Bryan/Sheamus – it should be a strong match, even though it’ll probably curtain-jerk. They’re both good in-ring and on the mic, and Daniel Bryan it just so good in his current role, but Sheamus is good at his role and has a lot of support
=2. The GM match – it seems like it could be a lot of fun, even if it’ll probably be really overbooked. It’s cool that D-Mac has gotten a WM match. I just hope team Johnny wins because Teddy is an awful GM
=2. Punk/Jericho – Punk is brilliant in-ring and on the mic. Jericho is very good too. It should be a very good match and I have high hopes for it

The reason I think he’ll get involved is because he’ll have the excuse Rock did it to his match in the main event last year.
The GM match is kind of like the MITB ladder match where lots of mid-carders are featured, I’m looking forward to it 😀

I can’t imagine too many people stopping watching if the Rock doesn’t kick Cena’s ass. The bigger issue with that is the Streak match. I know many people who won’t watch if HHH wins. That’s the match that needs someone to get involved, not just Shawn

-The Rock’s prime was 10+ years ago.
-I cannot express how much I do not, do not, do not, want to see Rock/Cena II at next year’s ‘Mania, or anytime this year.
-Hogan was the fan-favorite at WM 18, and lost.
-Both guys are terrible at the whole “smile at camera” thing. Lol :0
Oh, and I’m hoping…. Cena wins via AA. Out comes Lesnar at some point, BAM! F5! He yells, “That’s how it’s done!” and the show ends (after the fireworks/hooplah).
WM29- Cena vs another guy who left the company, not to dress up like a fairy, but to continue bringing the pain. He’s also the guy who if hadnt left, Cena would not have become “the big thing”.

The Rock’s best years was 10 years ago, but that does not mean he was in his prime in terms of pro wrestling. It’s hard to explain what I’m trying to say but he understands the business more now, he can use his popularity to get fans to like the other guy, which is Cena.
If Lesnar appears tonight, it’ll be in the Cell IMO and will have a year long programme with Taker because he was after screwing him or ‘tried’ to.

I was suprised by the clean finish, had it gone the other way there would have been a riot!
Loved the 80’s style arm check, it was a nice unexpected edition to the match, especially when Cena’s STFU usually finishes any wrestler.
The two put on a great a show and the fact that the Rock hadn’t wrestled a singles match for 8 years he’d some how managed to keep his ring rust in check with some WD40.
Looking forward to see where this goes from here

I hope Rock could even be as active in WWE as he was the last 12 months, I know it’s not much but it keeps him so interesting and I adore watching him.

I’ve heard that the match was beter than they thought it would be, but the ending was too sudden. That it needed a few reversals before the final Rock Bottom.

I didn’t think Rock looked that great in the match, he looked gassed within 5, 10 minutes. His sharp shooter looked absolutely terrible (Worse then normal, if its possible) And when he was locked in the STF, what the hell was face? He looked like he just finished “pleasuring” himself

The third time I watched this match, you can see Cena doing most of the work, as in he was carrying The Rock. The STFU I’d blame Cena for that, he didn’t make it look like he was holding any pressure to Rock. I won’t take anything away from it because I do think it was a good match.

Good preview Ray, even though I’m just now getting around to reading it. Lol. I felt the match was everything it should’ve been and even had the RIGHT finish. If this show was held anywhere but Miami then I felt that Cena should’ve won. Everyone at the bar where I watched the show at was absolutely marking out when Rock won. It was like our vindication that the Attitude Era was the best period in WWE history and that the biggest star of that period is better then the current star of the PG era.
I’ve heard alot of people crap on the match by saying Rock was blown up, but geesh, the guy hadn’t wrestled a long match in nearly 8 years. The match was dramatic as hell and more than lived up to my expectations.

That’s a good point, I wasn’t expecting much better. Both put on a tremendous performance. The ending was perfect, the match in general was ”old school” IMO. I guess The Rock had a lot to do with how the match played out. Your last point in the first part, I’m writing a column on how I disagree with that. As everyone seems to be saying it.

I look foward to that column. I was at work today and asked one of my coworkers what they thought of the match and they thought it sucked. In my mind I was like, “That was one of the most important and highly anticipated matches in WWE history. How could you not like it?”
