This will be a shorter review than last week. I love it when Smackdown is on Tuesday, but it’s not a good writing day for me. Smackdown was live from Hampton, Virginia this week.
Smackdown starts with Mean Gene Okerlund in the ring and Mean Gene introduces Sheamus to the ring. Sheamus apologizes to referee Chad Patton for kicking him in the head last week, to all the WWE officials, and everybody all over the world. Sheamus starts talking about learning from mistakes and he is interrupted by John Laurinaitis’s music. Johnny enters the ring and makes Sheamus apologize to Chad Patton, all of the WWE referees, and the world. Sheamus apologizes again and Johnny says that it wasn’t good enough. Johnny puts Sheamus on permanent probation and Sheamus is fired if he touches a referee. Johnny says Sheamus is fined $500,000. Five hundred thousand dollars?! That’s ridiculous. Professional athletes don’t get fined that much and many of them make a lot more money than Sheamus. Before Johnny leaves the ring, he announces that Sheamus will be in a tag team match and Mean Gene Okerlund will be his partner.
Randy Orton is in the locker room and his father Cowboy Bob Orton tells Randy to be careful against Mark Henry.
Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry
This was an okay match. The match was getting exciting, but Kane’s ring post pyro interrupted the match. Kane appeared on the titantron and said it would be a shame if his feud with Randy were to end now because Kane is having so much fun. Kane squats down and the camera shows Cowboy Bob Orton lying unconscious on the floor. Randy runs backstage to look for his father and when he finds him, Kane attacks Randy. This feud is getting a little bit more interesting. I don’t have high expectations for their soon to be announced Extreme Rules match, but it is an interesting mid-card feud and the match should be decent.
Winner: No contest

Lillian Garcia introduces Benny Camer who is already in the ring. He is from Chicago which is my hometown. Benny grabs the mic and begins to cut a promo. Wow, the jobbers on Smackdown are getting more promo time than some of the regular WWE Superstars. Camer say that this is his first match in the WWE and Ryback’s music starts before Camer can say anything else.
Benny Camer vs. Ryback
Ryback defeats Camer with two moves. The match was shorter than last week’s match. Ted DiBiase, Tony Atlas, Pat Patterson, and Hillbilly Jim were watching the match backstage and they seemed to be impressed. I was impressed too. Ryback looks awesome and I can’t wait until he starts facing better competition. He reminds me of when Vladimir Kozlov was dominating Superstars early in his WWE career. I hope Ryback has a much better career than Kozlov did.
Winner: Ryback

In the locker room, Tyson Kidd and Heath Slater are getting ready for their tag team match. Jimmy Hart walks into the room and he will be their manager during the match.
The Usos vs. Heath Slater and Tyson Kidd
Mick Foley was a guest announcer during this match. Foley had a brief career as a Smackdown announcer in 2008. This match had some interesting spots but it was hard to watch because Jimmy Hart wouldn’t shut up. Foley got up from the announce table and put Mr. Socko on his hand. Hart was standing by the announce table and saw Foley with Mr. Socko so he crawled into the ring. Hart crawled across the entire ring which distracted Heath Slater and helped the Usos get the win. After the match, Hart got in the ring to check on Slater. Foley entered the ring and put the Mandible Claw on Hart.
Winners: The Usos

Rowdy Roddy Piper is introduced to the ring for Piper’s Pit. It is the first Piper’s Pit on Smackdown in over six years according to Michael Cole. Piper shows footage of Daniel Bryan telling AJ to get out of the ring on Smackdown last week. Piper introduces Daniel Bryan. Piper says Daniel seems very happy for someone who lost the World Heavyweight Championship in 18 seconds. Daniel reveals that he will face Sheamus at Extreme Rules in a two out of three falls match. Piper tells AJ to come to the ring. AJ says Daniel is a good person. She says it is her fault and she made a mistake at WrestleMania. Piper says Daniel Bryan is using AJ. Daniel says if AJ loves him, she will leave the ring and AJ leaves the ring. Daniel starts to leave the ring too, but Piper stops him. Piper says Sheamus is going to kick Daniel Bryan’s head off his shoulders not once, but twice at Extreme Rules. Daniel says he is better than Sheamus and slaps Piper in the face. That was a very average Piper’s Pit in my opinion, but I like the two out of three falls stipulation for the Extreme Rules match. The time in between falls should be longer than their WrestleMania 28 match.
The Great Khali, Natalya and Alicia Fox vs. The Bella Twins and Drew McIntyre
It seems that Natalya is a face again and Nikki Bella is back to being a heel. I guess the WWE has stopping caring about the WWE divas. Drew McIntyre and Khali start the match, but Khali quickly shows that he is much stronger than Drew so Drew tags himself out of the match. Drew says he is better than this and leaves the ringside area. Alicia Fox and one of the Bella Twins are the new legal Superstars in the match. Fox quickly wins after hitting a suplex.
Winners: The Great Khali, Alicia Fox and Natalya
Rating: NR
After the match, Mae Young comes out and gives Khali a kiss.
Damien Sandow delivers another promo from an unknown location. He talks about sophistication and twitter. Sandow uses a bunch of words he found in the dictionary to make him sound very intelligent. It reminds me of when Chris Jericho started doing that in 2008 as a heel, but Sandow has a more impressive list of words. I had no idea what Sandow was talking about. If he continues to act like he is better than everybody and talk about boring topics, Sandow will be very easy to hate. His promos sound like a college lecture.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Hunico
After the match starts, Hacksaw calls out Sgt. Slaughter and Slaughter tosses the 4×4 to Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Hacksaw hits Hunico and Camacho with it and Hacksaw gets disqualified.
Winner: Hunico

Cody Rhodes is introduced to the ring. Cody says this blast from the past on Smackdown is a waste of time and we should turn our attentions to the future. Dusty Rhodes comes to the ring and Cody says that Dusty is embarrassing him. Cody tries to leave the ring, but Big Show comes out and shows an old “One Step Closer to Dashing” vignette that Cody did when he was “Dashing” Cody Rhodes. After the video, Cody walks away from the ring while Dusty dances to his music.
Daniel Bryan and Alberto Del Rio vs. Sheamus and Mean Gene Okerlund
Sheamus gets knocked out of the ring late in this match and the heels go after Mean Gene. Then the legends come out and the distraction helps Sheamus get the win over Daniel Bryan.
Winners: Mean Gene Okerlund and Sheamus
Rating: *
After the match, Ricardo Rodriguez and Michael Cole both get attacked in the ring. The legends celebrate in the ring with Sheamus and Smackdown ends.
No Smackdown awards this week, but I will include them next week. I thought this Smackdown was a little bit better than last week, but I was not impressed. I liked seeing the legends, but I think they were used a little bit too much and took too much time away from the younger superstars.
I found this to be a strange episode, and just found the way the legends were used to be weird. It was like a few had just been thrown into a segment for a random reason, just to get them on TV. I felt they would have brought out Dean Ambrose during Mick Foley’s appearance, as it would have made sense with their twitter feud.
I always enjoy seeing Rowdy Roddy Piper and Dusty Rhodes, their two segments were my favourite part of this. Although, I wish at times, they wouldn’t zoom in on Dusty’s face, how bad does his forehead look?!
Great review, summed up the show well!

It was an ok show. The best part of the night was Piper’s pit. I wonder if AJ will get involved in Sheamus v D-Bry match Extreme Rules? It looks to be shaping into a good PPV.

A really bad show to me. I didn’t consider it to be a blast from the past, it just seemed like the guys from legends house, and it should have been promoted that way. At least we did get Pipers Pit, yes. That was good.

Awesome, Tony!
I agree with you fully on Ryback. You get the same feeling you did when Kozlov was on that dominant run. Koslov could not talk at all, Ryback is getting there IMO. I find him interesting and love how WWE are having guys backstage showing the impressiveness rubbing on the legends.

You didn’t mention the “Enough is enough and it’s time for a change” comment Mick made. RIP Owen Hart.
To the comment you made about the too much time on legends. So, does that mean Cody Rhodes was right in his promo?

Cody was just being a dick about it. You can want more time for yourself, but when the show is billed as a “throwback”, legnds getting time is going to happen.

Almost every segment on the show had legends involved. That’s a little bit too much. Chris Jericho would have cut a “Legends needing that spotlight one final time” promo if he was there just like he did before WrestleMania 25.
At least there is still two Smackdowns to promote the PPV.

When it’s billed as having legends, they’re going to be in it a ton. Plus, they did use some of them with current stars and I’m sure many of today’s wrestlers were jazzed about it.

I thought it was going to be one big segment. I didn’t think it would be the entire show. It was okay, but it felt a little bit like the legends were hogging the spotlight from the other guys. Did Hacksaw Jim Duggan really need another match? I guess it’s better than wrestling in high schools.
LikeLike
No, usually “throwback” shows have older stars throughout the whole show. While it’s true that Hacksaw didn’t “need” to be in a match, he still gets pops from the crowd. In the grand scheme of things, that’s how you know a wrestler has left a mark on the business.

Didn’t think it was that bad a show, it had its moments.
The fired threats now hold more water with Johnny being GM for both brands, if they’re fired off Smackdown we know they cant just jump to Raw, the fine was a nice little touch to.
I think I laughed out loud with Josh Mathews comment of Sgt Slaughter straight from World War One!
Why is Khali still wrestling, he can barely walk and is in obvious pain every time he bends his damn knee’s!
Henry’s doing a good job at the moment and is actually managing to pull out some decent matches.

Khali is a major star in India and provides a plug-in to that market. That’s why he wrestles. I do feel bad for him. He has to be in agony. The scariest part about him is imagine if he were around 5 years younger.

Yeah, I’m aware of the fan value he brings but the guy’s in obvious constant pain and he’s hardly loved by the Americans. He obviously needs the money and WWE obviously needs the publicity. Surely there’s a better option for all involved

Loved Piper’s Pit! It was great to see them explain WHY you shouldn’t cheer for the character. He’s a dickhead.
Is it just me or did anybody else think Heath Slater and Jimmy Hart had an odd chemistry together? They could work together.

It’s weird to see Piper criticize Daniel Bryan when Piper was a heel for many years.

Now, he knows better. Plus, he’s been a “face” for a long time.

If Heels Anonymous existed, who would be the person in charge of those HA meetings?

Cena. He would start the program and allow the heels to better themselves. Plus, fewer heels means fewer people gunning for him.

I would say Triple H. No better heel than him.

Eh, sounds like I didn’t miss anything. Actually, it seems I haven’t missed anything in the months that I’ve not watched Smackdown. Just nothing interesting enough for me to go out of my way to make time for it.
