What can I say about Raw 1000? It was indeed an epic show as predicted. Now it’s been and gone we have SummerSlam to look forward to. As the second biggest selling PPV of the year it needs to be equally as epic. With some awesome matches on the card I for one am certainly looking forward to it.
The first ever SummerSlam took place on August 29th 1988 at Madison Square Garden and was dubbed then, as it is today ‘the biggest event of the summer’. This week I’m going to take a look back at what I deem to be the greatest SummerSlam matches of all time.
1988
The main event saw The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage) take on The Mega Bucks (Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant). A match of this magnitude called for a special guest referee, he came in the form of Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura. The Mega Powers started off with an advantage, but as soon as Andre was tagged in their fortunes began to change. Then out of the blue, Elizabeth got on the apron and took off her skirt revealing her panties and causing one of the most famous moments is SummerSlam history! As DiBiase and Andre were distracted Hogan and Savage took the victory! An epic start with many more to follow…
1994
This is my personal favourite SummerSlam match EVER! Bret ‘Hit Man’ Hart vs Owen Hart, in a steel cage, for the WWE Championship. It’s quite simply an amazing match. The steel cage is actually a steel cage, none of this chicken wire bull shit we see today. Bret was victorious but the feud gained momentum as Owen and Jim Neidhart attacked Bret after the match was over. Another great show of skill that we don’t see often enough in today’s WWE!
2005
This great match featured Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio in a ladder match. The prize, custody of Eddie’s biological son Dominik. Eddie had given his son to Rey and his wife to raise after a promiscuous lifestyle led to a pregnancy. This feud had my attention the throughout. It was a great storyline and a great match to decide the outcome.
2010
Team WWE v Nexus 7. Wow! What a match this was, so much going on I didn’t want to blink in case I missed something! Led by Wade Barret at the time Nexus had assaulted almost everyone on the roster. Cena announced that he would take on the Nexus at SummerSlam and the team he had to help him do it. They were, Edge, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali, Chris Jericho and Bret ‘Hit Man’ Hart (old Goat Face would also make a surprise appearance). SummerSlam saw team WWE victorious in an epic battle of skill and brut force. Again, what a match!

Loved the epic nature of the WWE/Nexus match! Great finish as well! Two rookies working together and taking out Cena only to get cocky, waste too much time, allowing Cena to pull out the victory!

Regarding your banner, there’s problems with the link of it so I’ll sort that out when I can.
I’m looking forward to it too. SSlam usually is a PPV worth spending your money on. Great matches your picked, Helen. My favorite match there is probably Eddie vs Rey. IMO it was Eddie’s last great feud. I loved the story going into it. I think that was one of Eddies greatest matches!

Summerslam’s thrown up quite a few good matches and moments, and now I think about it, seems more good matches occured at this PPV than I thought.
I see two of my favourite Summerslam matches have been mentioned in Bret v Owen and Bret v Bulldog (as well as all time favourite). Another one that stands out is Bret v Mr Perfect from 1991. Classic match between these, and to think, Hennig fought through the pain for this one!
Other standout Summerslam matches for me include: Michaels vs Vader 1996, Austin vs Taker 1998, Mysterio vs Edge 2002 and Taker vs Edge 2008.
