Hello everyone, welcome to a new column I’ll be doing for the next 5 weeks, my top 5 WrestleMania matches, I’ll be counting down from 5 to 1.
#5 on my list is from WrestleMania VI, the first WrestleMania to be held outside of the United States, April 1st, 1991, from the SkyDome in Toronto, Canada. The match of course, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan VS WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior, it was a match that was dubbed “The Ultimate Challenge.”
I’ll be clear about something, this match isn’t #5 because it was a great 5 star classic, because Hogan and Warrior were both limited in what they were able to do, but when you combine their talent, how over they were and the crowd reaction, this would definitely be in my top 5, I remember watching this match live on PPV, I was a HUGE Hulkimaniac, the match went on for close to 23 minutes, the end saw quite a few false finishes, in the end, The Ultimate Warrior pulled out the victory, thus holding both titles simultaneously, I remember crying my eyes out after Hogan lost, I was 7 and it was real to me then, and dammit It’s STILL real to me!
The PPV overall, wasn’t all that spectacular, Hulk Hogan VS The Ultimate Warrior was the only match that I actually remember off that PPV, it was really the only match that needed to be remembered, despite the talented guys who were on the show, this match blew them all out of the water, it was the longest match of the show, beating the 2nd longest match by over 10 minutes. I know length doesn’t mean much, but when you watched that match when it happened, it drew you in, people who watch it now, that never saw old school professional wrestling would find it boring, hell, I watched it back just the other day and even I thought there could have been more action, but back then it was one of the greatest WrestleMania matches I’ve ever seen, unfortinately, people growing up today who haven’t seen old school stuff may not enjoy it since wrestlers now are always reinventing things, back then matches ended with a body slam, or a sleeper hold.
I do recommend anyone to watch this match, but I’m also hoping they watch it with an open mind, and also hoping that they know they’re probably not going to see any crazy moves like they would now.
I hope you enjoyed part 1 of this column, next week I’ll take you through #4 on my list of my top 5 WrestleMania matches, I hope you all watch or have watched this match before. I also know that my top 5 may not be the same as someone elses top 5, especially since I’ve seen A LOT of wrestling lol, but I hope you enjoyed reading this and I hope you come back next week to check out my #4 match.
