Hello and welcome to another WrestleMania Countdown, I’m Joe. Last week, I took you back to WrestleMania 17 for the TLC match between Edge & Christian, The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz, this week, I’m taking you back much further. March 29th, 1987. The Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. An EPIC encounter for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, Macho Man Randy Savage defending his Intercontinental Championship against Ricky The Dragon Steamboat.
This will go down as easily one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history, both of these men revolutionized high flying wrestling in the mainstream, these guys were doing things nobody else was at the time, not to mention the amazing chemistry these two had in the ring together. Steamboat came out on top and became the WWF Intercontinental Champion, George The Animal Steele was also a great addition, the match lasted about 15 minutes, but it seemed longer to me, this may have just been the case of fitting a ton of stuff into a certain amount of time, but when I first watched this match it seemed pretty long, I could watch this match anytime and it would still be just as good as it was then. I loved the storytelling both men did in the ring, and the addition of George The Animal Steele and his fascination with Miss. Elizabeth was great as well. I would recommend any of you watch this match, I think you’d enjoy it a great deal.
Thank you for checking out this weeks pick, I hope you guys come back next week, next week I will reveal my #1 pick for my favorite match in WrestleMania history.
The sad part about this match is if it were done today and booked EXACTLY the same, Savage would be cheered like a hero while Steamboat would’ve been booed out of the building for being too goody goody.

Oh I agree. People just love jumping on the “heels are awesome” bandwagon lol.

With the current product, I think Heels are the more interesting characters. Which people take a liking to.

But, when The Green Goblin is about to take out New York City, I doubt the people are living there are thinking “Green Goblin is more interesting than SpiderMan. I hope he succeeds in leveling us.”.

I think this is a match that doesn’t age well. I recently saw some of the early WrestleManias like WrestleMania 1 and the matches were short and weren’t very entertaining. Steamboat vs. Savage was a match that was different back then. If they had that match now, it would be a Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler match.

Like Kofi vs. Dolph? I guess that means it would be awesome!

It would still be a good match but not a five star classic.

Of course not! It wouldn’t shock me if there had been a “BORING!!!” chant.

I think this match would still be good today, not spectacular like it was then, but it would be a solid match by todays standards. It would get over better more so in ROH then WWE or TNA though.

That’s possible. I’ve watched Steamboat vs. Savage a couple times and I wasn’t impressed. The way I see it, people who first saw it in 1987 appreciate it more than people who first saw it in 2012.
