Vengeance is mine. That’s the tag for this event and the sentence on everybody’s lips. There are eight big matches scheduled for tonight and the WWE Championship will be on the line. Alberto Del Rio defends the title against the man using his automatic rematch clause, John Cena. This match was announced by interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis and later on a tag team match would occur whereby John Cena and Jim Ross beat Alberto Del Rio and Michael Cole which meant Cena could pick the stipulation for Vengeance. John Cena chose a Last Man Standing match which could be a match to settle this feud once and for all.

The World Heavyweight Championship will also be on the line as Mark Henry defends against the man that Henry put on the shelf, The Big Show. Big Show returned and immediately targeted Mark Henry. Henry initially refused to give Big Show a title match but after Big Show attacked Henry, Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long made the match to stop Big Show inflicting any more damage. The WWE Tag Team Championships will also be defended as Air Boom once again put the titles on the line against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger. But Dolph will be pulling double duty tonight as he must also defend the United States Championship against the man that has pinned him twice in recent weeks, Zack Ryder.

A big match tonight pits the team of Triple H and CM Punk against the team that John Laurinaitis reinstated following their sacking from Triple H, The Miz and R-Truth. Miz and R-Truth continue to claim there is a conspiracy in the WWE against them and they are looking for justice, particularly against Triple H. The Divas Championship will also be defended as Beth Phoenix takes on Eve Torres. Eve has stood up to Beth Phoenix and Natalya, pushing Beth over a few weeks and embarrassing her. Also tonight Christian has been given one more match against Sheamus  and Randy Orton will battle against Cody Rhodes. Rhodes has cost Randy Orton two shots at the World Heavyweight Championship and tonight Orton gets his revenge in a non-title match.

In a dark match prior to the event Wade Barrett defeated Daniel Bryan.

The show kicks off with a video package, first concentrating on Triple H and then Big Show and Mark Henry and the WWE title picture.

Michael Cole welcomes us to San Antonio, Texas. He’s joined by Jerry Lawler and Booker T.

Dolph Ziggler is the only man to have previously wrestled at a Vengeance PPV, back when he was “Nicky” on the Spirit Squad and he lost in the 2006 main event. The tag team titled have only changed hands once in the five times they have been defended at Vengeance events. Kofi and Dolph start the match. Fair play to Dolph Ziggler, he must be shattered. He applies an armbar and then breaks it and hits another elbow drop for another two count. Beth Phoenix (c) vs. Eve – WWE Divas Championship match

This is a first PPV match between these two girls tonight. We’re shown some footage from earlier with Kelly Kelly getting attacked backstage by Beth Phoenix as Natalya and The Bellas encouraged her. Eve then made the save and it was all broken up. We’re told that as a result Kelly Kelly and Natalya have been banned from ringside. It’s a Vengeance debut for both girls. Both girls go right at it as the bell rings and Eve comes off the top with a sunset flip for a near fall. Beth takes down Eve for a two count and Eve then applies a wristlock. Eve hits an enzeguri and she is showing a lot of improvement tonight. Eve then ties Beth to the middle rope using her own belt! Eve lays in some boots and knocks Beth out of the ring. Eve looks to go out with her but Beth knocks her off the apron and then gorilla press slams her onto the barricade.

Beth gives Eve a kicking on the outside and then throws her into the ring apron before dragging her into the ring for a two count. Beth applies a seated abdominal stretch but Eve gets out of it only to run into a gutbuster. Beth applies a bodyscissors and screams at Eve to cry. Eve gets out of it and hits some right hands, a knee and a clothesline. Eve hits a flipping senton for a two count and then sits on Beths shoulders and applies a headscissors, taking Beth down to the mat but Phoenix manages to get to the bottom rope. Eve smashes Beth into the top turnbuckle but Beth then drops Eve on the top rope. Beth then sets up for the glam slam but Eve counters and then rolls Beth up for a two count. Beth runs into an elbow and Eve follows up with a kick to the face and then looks for a moonsault but Beth rolls out of the way. Beth hits the glam slam and that’s enough for the three. Good match from these two girls. Eve has really gone up in my estimations, she’s good.

Rhodes goes up to the middle rope but Orton gets out of the way of the incoming kneedrop.

This is Ortons 40th PPV in a row which is a record. Orton hits an uppercut but one if the baggers gets up on the apron. Orton hammers him off the apron but then turns around into cross-Rhodes! Cody hooks the leg but Orton kicks out at 2. Rhodes then mimics Randy Orton, motioning for the RKO but Randy hits him with a dropkick. Orton then hits the hangmans DDT and motions for the RKO himself but Rhodes motions to the other bagger (Lorcan) who gets up on the apron. Orton sidesteps Cody, sending him into the bagger and then hits the Intercontinental Champion with the RKO which is enough for the three! Randy Orton wins the match tonight! Solid enough match between these two tonight.

Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. John Cena – Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship

This is the second pay per view match between these two men. Cena won the first at Night Of Champions a couple of months ago. John Cena is 3-1 at Vengeance PPV’s, Alberto Del Rio makes his debut at the event. The ring is still in a collapsed state for this match which should make it interesting. Ricardo Rodriguez is present with a black eye courtesy of The Big Show. Del Rio throws Rodriguez at Cena which distracts the challenger long enough for Del Rio to take an early advantage. Alberto hits a suplex and then a running boot before knocking Cena out of the ring. The WWE Champion then throws challenger into the ring post as the referee makes his count. Del Rio picks up the bigger set of steps and smashes them off the head of Cena. Cena beats the count and the two men fight to the back. Cena throws Del Rio into a catering table and then tips over a huge flight case but Alberto just gets out of the way. Del Rio then slams Cena on the flight case before dropping part of the interview set on him. Cena gets up at 8 and the two men battle back to the entrance ramp where Ricardo Rodriguez gets involved and Alberto Del Rio throws Cena through the huge “V” for Vengeance that makes up the set. Del Rio then sets up a table and lays Cena on it before climbs the set. Cena gets up though and pulls Del Rio down from the set and through the table that he’d just set up! Del Rio just beats the count and Cena battles him through the crowd and back to the ringside area. Cena throws Del Rio into the barricade and then hits Ricardo Rodriguez with a clothesline for good measure.

Alberto Del Rio wins the match and retains the WWE Championship!

Rating: 7.5/10

And that was Vengeance 2011. It follows a few good PPV’s and again there was nothing terrible on this show. It started well with the Tag Team Championship match. All four men are very talented and once again they put on a great performance. Two really talented teams but it’s Air Boom who are getting the big push at the moment. Dolph then had to go right into a United States Championship match which is some effort because he did not hide in the tag team match. Dolph would beat Zack Ryder to retain the United States Championship but I do think he should drop the title if he’s going to be a fixture in the tag team division. Beth Phoenix then beat Eve Torres to retain the WWE Divas Championship. This was good, I think these might be the two most talented girls in the division. Eve has shown some real improvement recently. But I’m happy with Beth as champion so I hope she has a long reign.

Sheamus and Christian were up next and this match didn’t seem as important as their last match. I think it was because of the match placement. They opened the show last time so it felt like there was a lot more emphasis on them. Sheamus won this match again so I’m guessing that this is the end of the feud. I don’t think another match is necessary. But this match was decent enough. Then came the tag team match and I did wonder whether this one would close the show. The Miz and R-Truth won the match which was slightly surprising but it was because of the Kevin Nash interference. Kevin Nash hangs around like a bad smell. He’s been about for three months and he’s yet to have a match. Maybe he will finally have a match with Triple H at Survivor Series next month? and where does this leave CM Punk? More questions than answers following this match.

Randy Orton then beat Cody Rhodes in a decent match. Again, this match didn’t have a lot of heat and I found it a little difficult to get into but it was a good match by two talented wrestlers. I’d rather have seen the Intercontinental Championship on the line. It’s a big win for Randy Orton though, albeit a predictable one. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see this feud continue and boil over into a traditional Survivor Series match next month. The Mark Henry and Big Show match then caused absolute chaos when the ring imploded. This was cool, although we have seen it before, it was a good way to keep the heat and continue the feud. I can only see this leading to a gimmick match at Survivor Series.

I loved that the ring was still broken for the main event. This was pretty clever. It made the main event feel really unique. It was Alberto Del Rio that own the match after help from R-Truth and The Miz. I’m not sure where this leads. Cena and Punk against Truth and Miz? It’s a big push for Truth and Miz though. they’re getting a lot of air time and appearing all over the show. Del Rio wins but who will step up as his next opponent? With the brand split practically over I guess it could be someone like Randy Orton? We’ll find out soon but this was a good main event.
